Like everybody, my first action on the web is to use a search engine. Of course, the relevancy of result coming from key words is the most important but based on new technology we could have more expectation. What are the key functionalities of Search 2.0 ?

Hi Valerie,

I'm not sure if you are referring to "search aggregators" where a user types in a search term and results are returned (via RSS) from multiple search engines in a landscape that you can specify (examples: Gnosh.com, Addictomatic.com), or "social search", an evolving technology that determines search relevancy on the basis of human input (vs robots, algorithms and link structure of web pages). Let's go with social search...

Social search includes 1) shared bookmarks (like Delicious and Mister Wong), 2) content rating and tagging (like Digg), and 3) approaches that combine human input with computer algorithms (like personal favorites Mahalo and Scour).

Social search not only looks at various sources of metadata like web page content, tags, bookmarks, social ranking, commenting on bookmarks, articles & news, images, photos, videos, blogs, links and status updates, but goes even further by offering users a chance to interact directly with results and shape them for other users. When results are returned, users can promote or demote ranking based on relevancy (this is crowdsourcing).

One more example. Check out Aardvark. It's social search that connects your questions with your network based on a users profile information. For example, if I have a question on how to cook Lasagna, Aardvark scours the profiles and status updates of the people in my network (like Facebook and Skype) who reference Lasagna and asks those individuals my question.

Pretty cool stuff!
